Standard Win Human Rights Press Awards
Sing Tao Daily
and The Standard made an outstanding achievement at the Ninth
Human Rights Press Awards, collecting five awards in four
categories including General News, Feature, Cartoons and Photojournalism.
There were a total of 197 entries for the Awards.
The Human Rights
Press Awards is an annual event sponsored by the Amnesty International
Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Foreign
Correspondents' Club. In the Chinese section, Sing Tao Daily's
journalists Jimmy Lai and Wong Ka-hung won a certificate of
merit for their news story on a homosexual couple who challenged
the Inland Revenue Department's rules on taxation for married
couples, and photographers Thomas Ng and Chu Lok-ki won two
awards in the Photojournalism category.
In the English
section, The Standard also collected two awards. MetroNews
reporter Paris Lord won the top prize in the Feature category
for his series on the rights of the disabled in Hong Kong,
beating two separate entries from the Asian Wall Street Journal,
and cartoonist Gavin Coates won the English Cartoon top prize.
Celebration of 1st Anniversary
of Guangzhou Daily Special Edition in Sing Tao Daily
(Australia Edition)
Sing Tao Daily
joined forces with Guangzhou Daily in June last year to incorporate
content from the latter as a special section in Sing Tao Daily
(Australia Edition). Over the year, this special edition has
furnished our readers in Australia with the most up-to-date
news about the Guangdong Province. To celebrate the 1st anniversary
of this special edition, a celebration dinner was held and
over 160 guests from political, business and community sectors
were invited to participate in this memorable event.
The celebration
was held in Sydney on 17 August, 2004, attended by many special
guests including the Hon. Alan Cadman, representative of the
Hon. John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia; the Hon. Bob
Carr, Premier of New South Wales; Mr. Liao Zhi Hong, Consul
General of the PRC in Sydney and Mr. Wang Zhigang, representative
of Madam Fu Ying, the Ambassador of the PRC in Australia.
Mr. Zhang De An, Chairman of the Guangzhou Daily Group and
Mr. Wong Wai Ming, Chief Executive Officer of the Global China
Group were also present.
In his speech delivered
during the celebration, Mr. Wong Wai Ming underlined the importance
of this special edition in enhancing the development of Sing
Tao Daily in Australia. He said, "The collaboration between
Guangzhou Daily and Sing Tao Daily will help realize both
newspapers' goals in global development of their media business."
Sing
Tao Daily's Promotional Events Keep Rolling
As part of the
continuing efforts to strengthen Sing Tao Daily's market position
and to enlarge its readership base, a series of promotional
activities have been carried out this summer.
The Entertainment
x Features "3721" Summer Special Section, with its
pioneering 'Centrepage Features', has drawn excellent response
from our younger readers. To round up the summer holidays,
a party hosted by its image ambassadors, Isabella and Boy'z,
was held on 27 August, 2004.
Since the launch
of the Sing Tao Investment Weekly supplement in mid April,
Sing Tao Daily has continued to cater for the investment needs
of its middle-class readers, and has organized a number of
investment and trading seminars with Mr. Chan Wing Luk, Mr.
Tsang Chi Ying, Credit Suisse Privilege and the Hong Kong
Polytechnic University. The seminars were extremely well attended
and highly acclaimed by our readers.
In addition, Super
Property Browser reached new heights in circulation through
a series of "Summer Special" promotional activities
in July and August.
Sing
Tao Daily Joins Beijing Evening News in Hosting Dinner for
Beijing Visitors
Sing Tao Daily
was invited by Beijing Evening News to co-host a dinner on
4 September, 2004 at the Hong Kong International Trade and
Exhibition Centre. The dinner was highlighted by the special
appearance of the Honorable Mr. Li Gang, Deputy Director of
the Central People's Government's Liaison Office in Hong Kong
and Mr. Stephen Ip Shu Kwan, Secretary for the Economic Development
and Labour Bureau.
The dinner marked
the close of a tour organized by Beijing Evening News for
300 of its readers to visit Hong Kong, in support of the 8th
Beijing-Hong Kong Economic Co-operation Symposium. At the
dinner, Mr. Lo Wing Hung, CEO of Sing Tao Newspaper Group,
presided over a toasting ceremony to wish on the prosperity
of the Hong Kong and Beijing economies. The dinner was complemented
with a lucky draw and the renowned "Mobile Forbidden
City" fashion show, leaving all guests with fond memories
of Hong Kong.

Celebrates 2nd Anniversary with "JET Square - Tribute
to Local Creativity" Event
In celebrating
JET's 2nd anniversary, "JET Square - Tribute to Local
Creativity" was held on 3-19 Septebmer, 2004, where more
than ten local top creative designers' masterpieces, tailor-made
works for JET and JET Initiate Awards winning pieces were
exhibited. In addition, more than a hundred advertisers and
esteemed guests attended the gala celebration.
East Touch Organizes Hong
Kong's Largest Exhibition of Sports Shoes
As part of its summer promotion programme,
East Touch organized the "Sneaker Xpos", Hong Kong's
largest exhibition of sports shoes on 19 ¡V 23 August, 2004.
At the show, over 300 of the most classic as well as avant
garde styles of sports shoes were displayed. These included
a preview of the products for the fall/winter 2004 and spring
2005 from the top 8 international sneakers brand. This event
has further strengthened East Touch's position as a leader
in trends.
PC Market Enhanced
with Smart Choice Content
Starting from
24 August, 2004, PC Market has been joined by Smart Choice
to make it the must-read magazine for IT and digital products
fanatics. The magazine now offers not only the most professional
and up-to-date information on IT products and markets, but
also serves well as a comprehensive digital product shopping
guide.
Sing Tao Publishing
Launches 50 New Books at Hong Kong Book Fair 2004
The Group's books
publication arm Sing Tao Publishing Limited ("STP")
launched more than 50 new books and exhibited over 200 titles
at the Hong Kong Book Fair held on 21-26 July, 2004. New titles
included the 20 plus Walt Disney bilingual storybooks covering
a collection of famous cartoon characters and Disney stories.
Exclusively published by STP, these series were well received
by children and their parents. Other best-sellers included
"English Phonetic Guide", "Food vs Medicine"
and the East Asia travel series.
During the Book
Fair, STP organized a series of educational seminars and autographing
activities which attracted hundreds of audiences.

Job
Market Co-organizes the First Official Shenzhen Recruitment
Fair
On 8 August, 2004,
the Group's recruitment magazine JobMarket co-hosted the first
Shenzhen Recruitment Fair with Shenzhen Municipal Personnel
Bureau at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
The event was aimed at further enhancing human capital exchange
between the Mainland and Hong Kong, and offered more than
3,600 job openings from public and private enterprises. The
response was overwhelming and attracted over 11,000 jobseekers.
As the exclusive
co-organizer of the Shenzhen Recruitment Fair, JobMarket signed
the "Letter of Intent for the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Strategic
Alliance in Human Capital Exchange" during the Fair with
Shenzhen Recruitment International (a subsidiary of Shenzhen
Municipal Personnel Bureau) under the officiation of Mr. Xu
Zongheng, the Executive Vice-mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People's
Government. Ms. Fanny Chan, Publisher & CEO of JobMarket
remarked, "The alliance marks the beginning of closer

Tao Overseas at a Glance
As a testimony
to its long-standing efforts on contributing to society and
devotion in community services, Sing Tao Daily's New York
Bureau won the Media Cornerstone Award for 2004. The award
was presented by the Minority Business Development Agency
of the U.S. Department of Commerce on 12 August.
In addition, on
7 - 8 August, the New York Bureau sponsored the 14th Annual
Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York.
Sing Tao Daily
(Los Angeles Edition) celebrated its 15th Anniversary on 3
August and service awards were presented at the celebration
dinner to recognize the contributions made by employees.
Sing Tao Daily's
London Bureau sponsored the Hong Kong Day at Ascot Racecourse
on 25 July. The horseracing event, organized by the Hong Kong
Jockey Club, is an annual event for the local Chinese community.

72 Staff Presented
with Long Service Awards
To pay tribute
to the long service staff, Global China Group Holdings Limited
presented The Long Service Awards at the annual award presentation
ceremony held on 6 August, 2004. Among the 72 awardees, two
of the staff have served the Group for 30 years.
