The "Hong Kong Business Mastermind Award" presentation ceremony organized by East Week was successfully held on 26 October, 2004. The ceremony was highlighted by the special appearance of the Honourable Henry Tang, Financial Secretary of HKSAR together with over 400 valued guests from various business sectors. "Leader of the Year 2004" to be Held on 1 February 2005

"Leader of the Year" is an annual event established since 1994 by Sing Tao Newspaper Group to recognize and encourage the achievements of Hong Kong's finest individuals that have made outstanding contributions towards Hong Kong's success and prosperity, and to establish role models for the younger generation to strive for the best to help develop Hong Kong.

This year, the award presentation ceremony will be held on 1 February, 2005 and officiated by the Guest-of-Honour Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Secretary for Administration, HKSAR. Awards will be presented to winners in four categories - Business / Finance, Community / Public Affairs, Education / Research, and Sports / Culture / Performing Arts - selected by an authoritative Panel of Judges. Sing Tao Daily and The Standard will fully report on the event.

Past award winners include Mr. Jack So, Mrs. Laura Cha, Professor Charles K. Kao, Dr. Lee Lai Shan, Professor Joseph Sung and Professor Sydney Chung, all of whom have excellent achievements in their respective arenas.

Award 2004" has already started in mid December and the results will be announced at the award presentation to be held in late January 2005.

Sing Tao Daily Offers More Benefits and Quality Content to Readers

JobMarket Organizes "Recruitment Day & Seminar 2004 ─ Tourism, Retail, Services & Finance Industries"

Hong Kong's economy staged a strong recovery this year with the effects of the Individual Visit Scheme and CEPA benefiting the tourism, retail, service and finance industries in particular. In view of this market trend, JobMarket organized the "Recruitment Day & Seminar 2004 ─ Tourism, Retail, Services & Finance Industries" in which 23 recruitment and educational organizations participated, offering over 1,000 job vacancies and providing an extensive range of education information.

The event was held at the YMCA in Tsimshatsui on 9 November, offering job vacancies in industries ranging from retail, tourism, telecommunications to finance & insurance, and real estate. The highly successful event attracted over 2,000 visitors and provided an effective channel to meet employers' recruitment needs.

JobMarket Collects Award from Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups

JobMarket was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups for its continuing devotion to youth employment. At the "Youth Career Expo" organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups on 19 November, Mr. Stephen Ip Shu Kwan, the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour Bureau, presented the Certificate of Appreciation to JobMarket. Honourable guests of the day included Dr. Rosanna Wong Yick Ming, the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and Mr. Yip Kim Po, Chairman of the Ocean Grand Chemicals Holdings Ltd.

Sing Tao Daily Overseas Bureaus' journalists won four awards at "The Annual New California Media (NCM) Awards 2004" held on 17 November at the Sacramento Convention Centre in Los Angeles, USA. The Award was organized by the New California Media with an aim to pay tribute to outstanding journalists in ethnic media. There were a total of 250 entries this year and 19 winning pieces were selected by a Panel of Judges.

Sing Tao Daily's New York Bureau co-organized the "2004 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York Photography Contest" with the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival Committee in New York. The award presentation ceremony was held on 13 November at the Hong Kong Economic & Trade New York Office. Mr. Rick Ho, the Deputy General Manager of the New York Bureau remarked, "The quality of entries is exceptionally high and the response is overwhelming."




Sing Tao Daily has relocated its US West headquarters to Brisbane in San Francisco on 28 September in line with its business expansion. A number of honourable guests were invited to the grand opening ceremony. The old office in South San Francisco will be home to the paper's printing and circulation departments.

 

Global China Group Reports Interim Results 2004

Global China Group announced its interim results on 27 September, 2004. Overall, consolidated turnover rose 20.1% in the first half of 2004 to HK$678.2 million on the back of higher circulation and advertising revenues. The Group's core media operations recorded a 24.7% increase in turnover to HK$536.4 million. The Human Capital Management business also achieved a significant growth in turnover of 50.3% to HK$24.4 million. Higher newsprint cost and usage and investments in its media operations resulted a loss in operating activities of HK$7.0 million.

Looking forward, management stated that the Group would adopt a prudent approach, combining a strategy of investing selectively in new products and markets for long term growth, and exercising discipline in cost control and productivity gains to ensure improved profit performance.

Appointment of New Independent Non-executive Director

Global China Group appointed Mr. Richard Yun Zing King as an independent non-executive director and a member of the Audit Committee of the Company with effect from 18 November 2004. Mr. King has over 10 years of investment banking experience, and is a member of the board of directors of J.P. Morgan Securities (Asia Pacific) Limited and a senior member of J.P. Morgan's investment banking team in Asia.

受自由行及《更緊密經貿關係安排》(CEPA)等主要因素帶動 ,香港旅遊業復甦,連帶零售、服務以至金融業均全面向好。《JobMarket求職廣場》洞悉市場走勢,特別主辦「旅遊、零售、服務及金融招聘會暨講座2004」,雲集23個招聘和教育機構,提供超過1,000個就業職位及大量教育資訊。

《星島日報》海外版記者在2004年「少數族裔普立茲新聞獎」勇奪四個項獎。該新聞獎由美國新加州傳媒協會(NCM)主辦,旨在表揚有出色表現的少數族裔媒體,今年協會共收到超過250件參賽作品,經評審委員會嚴格篩選後,選出19件獲獎作品,並於11月17日在美國洛杉磯沙加緬度會展中心舉行頒獎典禮。

《星島日報》紐約分社與紐約香港龍舟節協會合辦「第二屆紐約香港龍舟節攝影比賽」,並於十一月三日在駐紐約香港經濟貿易辦事處舉行頒獎儀式。《星島日報》紐約分社副總經理何力特別指出,今屆參賽作品水平相當高,反應較去年更踴躍。


 

為配合業務發展,《星島日報》美西總部於9月28日遷入規模更大的三藩市布雷斯本新址,並舉行了盛大的開幕典禮,邀得多位貴賓出席,而南三藩市的舊址則會撥作《星島日報》印刷及發行部門之用。

泛華公布二零零四年度中期業績

泛華集團於2004年9月27日公布其二零零四年度中期業績。由於發行量上升及廣告收入增加,集團的綜合營業額增至六億七千八百二十萬港元,上升百分之二十點一。集團於2004年上半年的核心媒體業務營業額增至五億三千六百四十萬港元,上升百分之二十四點七。而其人力資本管理業務亦錄得可觀成績,營業額增至二千四百 四十萬港元,上升百分之五十點三。由於報紙紙張價格及使用量的上升,加上集團繼續投放資源於媒體業務上,導致2004年上半年錄得七百 萬港元經營業務虧損。

展望未來,管理層將繼續持謹慎態度,以選擇性策略投資在新產品及市場上,務使利潤長期增長。同時,嚴格控制成本,加強生產力,以保障盈利目標。
